BBC: Doodling 'may help memory recall' →
I am vindicated after years and years of filling the margins of notes with inane doodling. I also find that solitare does a fine job of keeping you awake and mostly focused when you’re note-taking on a computer.

What Would BGE Do?
Because this is a problem that needs to be jabbed with a humongous stick. cakeordeath: I just finished reading Jeff Jarvis’ “What Would Google Do?” and have been wondering how, exactly, to blog about it. My utility company has answered that question. Baltimore Gas and Electric Co., which provides me with — you guessed it — gas and electricity, has created a very, very odd “linking policy.” It...

In which I receive a mysterious phone call and bid...
One of the craziest things about Japan is that you don’t really have to know someone’s address to send them something… as long as you know their place of work, apparently. I got a phone call in the office today. It was completely in rather good English, which totally baffled me for several seconds. The nice fellow on the other end informed me that I was going to receive flowers...

Drink a day increases cancer risk →
Maybe more people should consider giving up alcohol for Lent. Of course, everything you do that is normal will give you cancer and/or kill you eventually (including breathing)… so this is just a reason to not buy into the hype of drinking a glass of wine a day for health (because it ain’t as healthy as you think).

IMPORTANT KNOWLEDGE I GAINED TODAY
There is a real Caturday here in Japan! And it was this past Sunday! February 22nd (2/22) in Japanese is “ni-gatsu, ni-jiu-ni-nichi” and a cat’s call in Japanese is “nyao”… so all the “ni” sounds in the date makes it sound like the mewing of a cat in Japanese. So happy belated Caturday! In other news, I totally got 18 liters of free heating oil...

Piano Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me; Taking me back down the vista of years, till I see A child sitting under the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as she sings. In spite of myself, the insidious mastery of song Betrays me back, till the heart of me weeps to belong To the old Sunday evenings at home, with winter...

Welcome to today, Tumblr!!
TUMBLR HAS DRAFTS! FINALLY! You have no idea how many things I DON’T post because I’d wander away from an entry in progress, then forget about it and close the browser window. On the one hand, that probably keeps me from flooding the internets with even more drivel, but on the other hand, you probably came here to read my babble so who am I to limit your supply of it?

How NOT to get into the JET Program
ilovejapan: “So why did you choose the JET program?” SpecR: interview answer: because I’ve invested a lot of time and effort into learning the language (true) back of my mind answer: because yellow women get my rocks off (also true)” — This quote comes from one of my favorite posters on the I Think Im Lost boards. Not only does he show why he would be an incredibly bad choice for a new ALT, he...

11 Things Kids Will Not Learn in School
randominternet: Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it! Rule 2: The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself. Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won’t be a vice president with a car phone until you earn both. Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get...
