I’d give God more credit than that…

Pet peeve airing time!

So a 6-year-old boy took the family car’s keys and tried to drive himself to school when he missed the bus (that is hella dedication, son). The linked article describes it perfectly coherently… kid drove 6 miles, wove in and out of traffic, and finally crashed… but was not hurt and continued to walk the last mile towards school so he wouldn’t miss breakfast and PE.

What gets me is the very last sentence:

“This really is a story of miracles,” Wilkins [the County Sheriff] said. “The Lord was with him, along with everybody else on the highway.”

Can someone explain to me why people have to say this and why newspapers have to publish it? If sky-papa had been with the kid, the kid wouldn’t have gotten in the car at all. But I guess God works in mysterious ways… that are miraculously similar to chance.

Personally, I’d thank the Ford Motor Company for making a decently safe car, that the other drivers on the road have half a brain to avoid an erratic vehicle, and the kid’s skill at driving video games.

A kid driving a car, endangering lives, then being put in protective custody with his sibling while their parents are fined and jailed is NOT a happy ending. How can anyone call this a miracle?
