AP alleges copyright infringement of Shepard Fairey’s Obama. Watch your references, kids. (via @mashable)
Damn straight you gotta watch your references!
Personally, I’m glad Shepard Fairey has finally gotten into trouble for plagarizing others’ art. Now don’t get me wrong; I appreciate art that takes exisiting media and rehashes it as a form of social commentary… but you credit the original work—that’s how the commentary is effective. Fairey never gives proper credit for the sources of his imagery… and the final product often does not have any significant meaning except to look pretty nifty on merchandise, so it really is just uninspired art snatching (for a profit). There is fair use, and then there is making others’ creative properties your clip art library and abusing the hell out of it.
That, and I just don’t think anything he does is impressive or skillful… though he sometimes manages to make it look nice looking (hi-ho redundancy!). First thought upon seeing that Obama poster: “Well, there’s a Photoshop filter or two in that.”
should just eat it. Seriously.
