Kelly:
why do people seem more willing to save a stray dog than provide support for a homeless person, or someone in a third world country
Lucy:
a stray dog is right in front of your eyes and you can see that they are helpless
Lucy:
there is the idea that homeless people are homeless because it is their own fault
Lucy:
and people in third world countries suffer from the out of side out of mind effect
Kelly:
yes but a DOG is a DOG
Kelly:
don't get me wrong
Kelly:
i love my dog
Lucy:
and dogs are man's best friends
Kelly:
but it's not a human
Lucy:
american culture values dogs
Lucy:
they do not value perceived deadbeats on the streets
Lucy:
it doesn't help that some people are ACTUALLY beggars because they can make money without doing work
Lucy:
like this one guy on a street near campus who is always around in a wheelchair, begging for change... but his legs actually are fine and he takes fricking LUNCH BREAKS
Lucy:
(he even upgraded to an electric wheelchair)
